What can I do to treat anxiety attacks?

Posted on Nov 15, 2008 under what is anxiety |

After attending the wake of my cousin I assumed I was fine. 3 weeks later, this monday night, I started having intense anxiety. I come home and cry and mainly feel nausea. The anxiety is so bad, it has made me lose my appetite. It’s interfering with my entire life right now, my parents and my boyfriend are extremely worried.

Are there any treatments I can use to help myself?

Drink ice cold water, it hits a nerve at the back of the throat and slows the heart down.

I take propanalol to ease the shaking and slow my heart down. Its a beta blocker.

Breathe in for 4 and out for 4, put your hand on your tummy and when you breathe in push the hand out. This is to make sure you are breathing deeply. Do this for a while until you feel calmer.

Focus on every little small minute detail around you. If you look at a chair, notice the bolts in it, the texture of the fabric, the smallest detail in the pattern etc.

I learnt these at a private psych hospital i was in.

You will prob need some bereavement counseling.

Valarian root is a natural sedative used to treat anxiety and insomnia. You can buy it in health shops or online.

I hope this helps!! and get some counseling as the other techniques will only help short term, they wont stop you getting the anxiety attacks.

Hugs

    Vagal nerve stimulation can help.

Close your eyes and press gently on your eyelids for about 2 minutes. This will stimulate the vagus nerve, which controls the heart. It will lower your heart rate and help to calm you.

Beta Blockers also work in a similiar way. They block the action of adrenaline on the heart, slowing it down and making you feel calmner. I take 10mg of Propranolol each morning and it helps me, but I do the vagus nerve stimulation if I start to feel jittery during the day.

Cut out ALL caffeine - even in tea and fizzy drinks.

Make sure that the doctor gives you a full check up in case there’s an underlying health problem that you’re missing.

You need to go to the doctor, and talk with him about it. There are a variety of medications you can take that will help.

When it comes to emotional/mental issues such as Panic Attacks or General Anxiety, I really believe drugs don’t work. They just mask the underlying problem.

I used to get severe panic attacks, and the rest of the day was controlled by anxiety. I had a hard time leaving my house, going to work, interacting with people. I would get dizzy, my heart would race, it felt like I was going to pass out, or die…

Talking with my Doctor didn’t help, he just kept pushing meds. I was looking for a cure!

I found that cure on a website! I had doubts at first, but I was willing to give it a shot … and it worked.

What I learned was so simple, yet was so effective. It was called the “One Move Technique”.

You can find out more about it here (they even offer free email coaching if you need extra help):

Hope this helps, cause it sure did for me. I’m my old self again, and I did it without meds!
