Is my anxiety a result of being bullied as a child?

Posted on Nov 26, 2008 under what is anxiety |

I was severely bullied as a kid.
Form 5 - 12yrs of age i was the "target"…. fat, crooked teeth, frizzy hair, more developed, dumb..
Kids, mainly boys would call me names, spit on me, puch my boobs and push me down the stairs.

Things have changed now (15yrs old) and i have a few friends..

Lately i have been getting severe panic attacks..
Could being shy, isolated and bullied as a child have caused my anxiety issues.

The two could well be related and it wouldn't surprise me if they where. Having said that, I don't know what is happening in your life right now, for all I know there could be something else going on that could be causing/adding to it. Whatever the cause is I would advise you to go and seek help with this problem. Panic attacks are absolutely horrible to go through and in my experience problems like this will only get worse without treatment. Good luck!

It could have but there are probably other things that have caused it.

    Could be.

Seek some professional help, it might help.

Could also just be your age. Most of the kids I know at that age range have lots of issues, most of them from all their bodily changes.

You will be okay, just be patient and know that we have all had problems like that.

I am sorry that happened to you. Kids can be cruel.

I am sure it does cause your anxiety. You are getting old enough that it is going to be up to you to change and to fix your insides. The longer you suffer from what they did, the more they win. Don't let them keep getting the better of you.

Don't pop a pill, that just covers up the issue. Go RESOLVE the issue. See if your Mom will let you talk to a counselor for a while so you can actually get rid of the anxiety. Let somebody who actually understands anxiety and abuse help you recover from it.
You would go see a doctor if you broke your leg right? He would put it in a cast and tell you it will take 3 months to heal right? It's the same thing.

It sure can. I was bullied as a child and through high school for a variety of reasons. I think it then became an ingrained subconcious, fear of my interactions with others, whether warranted or not, that led to some of my issues.
    1) See a therapist about this for some good old fashioned therapy.
    2) You need to "reframe" the perspective in which you live now and give yourself credit and actively find your positive qualities. Can people be mean to you? Sure, but it isn't always YOU… it's their insecurities, lives, etc… don't direct it back at yourself.
    3) For the panic attacks, you need to cool down and get stabilized. I would recommend seeing a psychiatrist in addition to a therapist to baseline yourself and "build" a foundation for healing emotionally. Meds can help jumpstart that, especially if your panic attacks are severe. No one is saying "meds for life"… but I am saying… time to get base lined and start to heal from these past frustrations that have created intense inner turmoil.

Yes,yes and yes. I know just how you feel . I was teased a lot because I was the class "brain", and because I was starting to show symptoms of what turned out to be paranoid schizophrenia and bi-polar mental illnesses. This was 35 years ago (I'm 47) ,so being picked on is nothing new.

Like you, I was shy, isolated and bullied. But I was fortunate that I had a teacher who brought me out of my shell and got me involved in athletics (cross country) Slowly I came around, and by the time I was a senior in high school, I was one of the most respected members of the senior class.

My advice to you is to see a counselor-there's no shame in doing so-all it can do is help you. Next seek out something in school that may interest you-athletics,art,music,drama,pep club, to name a few-take a deep breath, and dive right in! In a month or two, you'll be so involved in what you are doing, (not to mention the new friends you'll be making) you won't have time to be shy! It worked for me all the way through high school and college, and I hope it'll work out for you! YOU CAN DO IT!!! Good luck and God Bless!
