Shell shock vs Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?
Posted on Nov 18, 2008 under Post Traumatic Stress Disorder |I’m doing a research paper on the shift from labelling people with shell shock in war times to now calling it post traumatic stress disorder. What’s the differences between the 2? Why was it renamed??
They are the same. They changed the name because it just doesn’t apply to veterans anymore. Many victims of childhood abuse and/or trauma also suffer from PTSD. Others suffer from this Disorder as well. Hope this helps. t.

Shell shock and PTSD are essentially the same. The terms have been changed because we know so much more about it now, and that is reflected in its more “medical” name.

There is no difference. Shell shock is more of a slang term that was created when people first started to experience it. It was given a “official” name sometime between the vietnam war and the first gulf war. More and more people were being diagnosed with PTSD, and they decided that not just people who experienced war suffered from it; crime victims, victims of the 9/11 attacks, police officers…they all can suffer similiar symptoms. Therefor, the rename was appropriate.
