Is there any way a person wont have to go to jail because the suffer from panic attacks?
Posted on Oct 14, 2008 under panic attacks |A friend of mine gets panic attacks, and sometimes passes out from them. I'm looking for any information to keep her out of jail. Like if she's a liability to the jail, or something. I'm in Hillsdale, Mi because i know different jails have different rules.
You are correct, jails (and prisons) do vary in rules and procedure. However, "panic attacks" would most likely not keep her free. What may help is to ask her attorney to have her evaluated for mental competence. Is she under a doctor's care?
If she generally is medicated, be aware the jail will provide her medication if prescribed. Also, if she claims "panic" or anxiety difficulties she will probably end up having psychiatric counseling. This could also result in her being placed in a "psych dorm" which may be less appealing than regular housing.
Bottom line, just tell her to take her medicine (go to jail) and get it done and over with. I wish her good luck.

If she is convicted and has to serve, she might be able to serve in a federal medical center (a hospital / jail), if not a psych ward.

Since they have people in jail who are drug addicts, who go through their detox in jail which can be dangerous, women in jail that are pregnant, etc. I don't believe your friend has a chance in hail of getting out of going to jail based on panic attacks. They will just let her pass out and/or wake her up with salts.

If he is deemed to be insane by the court a person could go to a mental facility instead of jail or if the court is asked to give a person home confinement instaed of jail the court has that option as well depending on the crime.
