Would an obsessive-compulsive disorder be dangerous for a safety-critical project ?

Posted on Oct 10, 2008 under obsessive compulsive disorder |

Because without proper supervision, a person could do a lot of damage to the project in a short time. The person's own obsessions and compulsions might dictate that they make safety-related changes.

I beleive you have answered your own question. Only an obsessive-compulsive would find fault with your well-reasoned conclusions.

It depends on how bad the obsessive-compulsion is. I am slightly OCD but I function fine 95% of the time. I get a little extra OCD when I am anxious but I normally function fine anyways.

I have severe OCD (in excess of 35 on YBOCS) and I see no reason why OCD would or should impact a safety critical project. However and having said that, there are MANY different obsessions and compulsions. If this is a concern you should consider speaking with a qualified Physician.

That is a darn good question for a psychologist or psychiatrist, and I am neither.

An obsessive-compulsive person could be very useful to a project in terms of its safety. OCD people can make good doctors, engineers, programmers and other professions where attention to detail is required. An example of how this works from my work is that i will work from the most serious but unlikely conditions to the less serious when i do health screening, physical examination and history taking. I then take this work home with me and lie awake at night worrying about whether i did it right, and sometimes contact my patients to run through issues with them (not at night). This is the kind of thing an OCD person does, such as constantly checking and rechecking, and it makes safety quite a high priority. Similarly, a medical professional who is obsessive about hygiene will prevent their patients from getting infections.

Basically, i completely disagree with you. I think they would be absolutely ideal.
