Do you think I might have obsessive compulsive disorder?
Posted on Nov 13, 2008 under obsessive compulsive disorder |I always need control in a situation, and sometimes I feel I need everything rearanged into 90° angles, kinda like a general organising his troops into divisions and regaments. I also tie my shoes up until they feel right or else I pretty much loose it.
Other people in the med school school I attend, say these traits will help if I'm gonna become a surgeon, If I keep these compulsions under control. So if all of the lines in a room are paralel and objects are symetrical or make up some kind of geometrical pattern I won't get angry.
Does this sound like OCD or something else?
its certainly sounds like OCD, but there are so many different forms of it i think it would be best to get it checked out by a professional. but it could also be some form of anxiety, again get it checked out. anyway here are a few websites i think could help:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OCD
http://www.ocdonline.com/
http://www.medicinenet.com/obsessive_compulsive_disorder_ocd/article.htm
anyway good luck with the medical course and hope you make a great surgeon.
Oh yeah just remembered, in the UK medical series Holby City, one of the surgeons there has a form of OCD, and he is one of the best!!!
good luck!!!

Yes, you are sick. Even if it'll help your career, by the time you get your diploma this behavior might grow to be a nuisance to you. Get help!

OCD is when a person gets re occurring unacceptable nasty thought patterns in the mind that will not go away, they temporarily satisfy the sheer anxiety caused by these thoughts by performing rituals like the ones you mention, although some people can have the thoughts and not perform rituals, that's called "pure o" and i believe yes! a person can perform rituals with no thoughts that bother them, SSRI meds and CBT can help up to 80% if it's affecting you for than 8 hours a day, it's a condition that may be genetic and these problems generally show up in early teen years, it's a wiring fault in the brain, i think it's called the caudate nucleus? can be overcome with the CBT or a newer version called MBCT, google it and get some more info, i'm sure you will make a fine surgeon as people with OCD are the most organised, trustworthy and consciencious folks around.
Here's a link for the caudate nucleus…

Remember friend that a high % of people have some degree of OCD and instead of being seen as a personality trait can instead be regarded as somewhat of a quality depending how u live with it, good luck…
