What are the symptoms of Anxiety Attacks?

Posted on Nov 14, 2008 under symptoms of anxiety | 7 Comments

I dont go into heavy breaking or freakout on the out side. Its something that takes place inside my mind. Does that make sense? Everything is all paranoid, even the sound of a car driving down the road outside, and I dont want to move, its hard for me to move around. The only thing that calms me is laying down in my bed and taking a nap. I dont even know if there is a pill i can take that will help this? Could this also be a after affect of another drug i am taking?? Actually i feel like a zombie when i am in this state. I had this incidence while driving in a car last week, and now i afraid to go visit my mom who lives a couple of hours away!

Yeah that is anxiety. I suffered from it for six years. The particular thing you are feeling, where you feel paranoid and like a zombie is called a dissociative episode. Don’t fret about it too much, that only makes it worse. You can overcome these episodes completely, I did. Write me any time if you need advice on this.

Symptoms of stress and anxiety for no reason?

Posted on Nov 03, 2008 under symptoms of anxiety | 5 Comments

I work in an office and everyday I seem to get these reocurring symptoms for no reason at all it normally starts in the afternoon my heart starts racing and I get dizzy with a heavy headache which makes my eye sight poor and makes my clumsy. This is turn makes my irritable. What is this and why if there is no reason behind it should I get it my job isn’t stressful?

Your symptoms first need to be checked out by a medical doctor to rule out any physical causes.

If there are no apparent physical causes, it is likely that the symptoms you are experiencing are caused by anxiety. Sometimes anxiety can happen without any identifiable cause. The fact that your symptoms occur in the afternoon suggests that there may be a physical cause (like hypoglycemia) or a pattern that your body has been conditioned into.

If your symptoms are indeed caused by anxiety, you might find that relaxation techniques and calming self-talk are quite effective (see links below for information).

An excellent book on anxiety is “When Panic Attacks,” by David Burns. It describes several techniques for decreasing anxiety. I highly recommend this book.

I have included some links to my website for more information on anxiety symptoms and using relaxation to decrease stress and anxiety. On the relaxation downloads page there is a relaxation audio script entitled “Relaxation to Relieve Anxiety” that might be helpful for you.

Hope this helps!

What are symptoms of anxiety and how do I know when I need help?

Posted on Nov 02, 2008 under symptoms of anxiety | 9 Comments

Negative emotions (like sadness, stress, anger, etc.) causes your Serotonin production to be low; when your Serotonin level is low, you are more prone to getting Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, etc.

Medication like Antidepressants (SSRI - Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) helps to boost Serotonin level.
But there are natural ways to do it without medication. There’s this strange herb called “St John’s Wort” - it is said to be more effective than Prozac. No, it is not for mild depression only and ignore those sayings. In fact, it does help anxiety and panic-attacks as St John’s Wort works like prozac. Other natural ways will be exercise, diet, more exposure to light, etc.

The problem is that, even if your Serotonin is balanced… you have that “learned behavior” in your mind. You need to break that initial cycle to destroy that learned behavior - Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) does this. A technique that you can use without CBT will be Distraction… There are several other techniques to help cope them!
Ok, to use Distraction: Firstly, try to….

Can depersonalization disorder cause speech impairment, memory lapses, feelings of detatchment? And feeling as if one is losing his/her mind or going mentally retarded?

I feel these things : ( blaaaah.

P.S I’ve been going to therapy, so far it hasn’t helped much, I’m about to switch to a different therapist since I’ve been going for about 3 months now and I haven’t gotten better. Also, my symptoms don’t just happen when I’m having a panic attack -whenever I think about the act of talking, it’s as if I just..can’t. It’s like I’m disabled, blank, dead. This sucks.

Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress. It helps you cope with tense situations. It also helps you focus on the task at hand and motivates you. Almost everyone experiences anxiety from time to time. Typically, anxiety goes away when the triggering event is resolved.
However, anxiety is a problem when it becomes an excessive, irrational dread of everyday situations, such as riding an elevator or leaving your house. People with anxiety disorder experience fear and worry that are out of proportion to the situation. These feelings are difficult to control and are more intense and last longer than normal feelings of anxiety. For instance, while it’s normal to feel anxiety before public speaking, a person with anxiety disorder may consistently worry about speaking with small groups of people in everyday situations.
Both normal worry and anxiety may be associated with the following symptoms. However, a person with anxiety disorder will experience these symptoms more frequently and intensely:
Restlessness
Fatigue
Irritability and crankiness
Muscle tension
Headaches
Sleep difficulties (unable to fall or stay asleep)
Feelings of panic, such as sweating and shortness of breath
If you find it difficult to control your worry or stress or if anxiety interferes with your daily activities, consult your doctor or a mental health professional. If you are diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, effective treatment is available.
