Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) - Ghosts (with lyrics)

Posted on Nov 03, 2008 under Post Traumatic Stress Disorder | No Comment

This video outlines some of the causes, signs and symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). PTSD, when gone untreated, can lead to such extremes as suicide.

If you, or someone you love, suffer from PTSD, or suspected PTSD, please see a counselor.

There are many on-line sites that can be researched for further information. You may also want to check at Medicine Net:

http://www.medicinenet.com/posttraumatic_stress_disorder/article.htm

WARNING: This video includes graphic images from (1) Oklahoma City Bombing; (2) World Trade Center Attacks; (3) Omaha Beach, WWII; (4) Hue City, Vietnam War; and (5) a Police Officer Funeral.

The end message is one of hope. Those suffering from PTSD come from a variety of causes, including rape, combat, disasters - both natural and man made, and more.

The music is Ghosts, by Dan Fogelberg:

Sometimes in the night I feel it
Near as my next breath
and yet, untouchable
Silently the past comes
stealing
Like the taste of some forbidden
sweet.
Along the walls; in shadowed
rafters
Moving like a thought through
haunted atmospheres
Muted cries and echoed laughter
Banished dreams that never
sank in sleep.
Lost in love and
Found in reason
Questions that the mind can find
no answers for
Ghostly eyes
Conspire treason
As they gather just outside the door….
Every ghost that calls upon us
Brings another measure
in the mystery
Death is there
To keep us honest
And constantly remind us
we are free.
Down the ancient corridors
And through the gates of time
Run the ghosts of days
That we left behind.
Down the ancient corridors
And through the gates of time
Run the ghosts of dreams
That we left behind.
Sometimes in the night I feel it
Near as my next breath
and yet, untouchable
Silently the past comes
stealing
Like the taste of some forbidden
sweet.
Every ghost that calls upon us
Brings another measure
in the mystery
Death is there
To keep us honest
And constantly remind us
we are free.
Down the ancient corridors
And through the gates of time
Run the ghosts of days
That we left behind.

Horrors of War For Soldiers (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)

Posted on Nov 02, 2008 under Post Traumatic Stress Disorder | No Comment

Reality: hundreds of soldiers are suffering PTSD when returning from their tours. many hide their horrors, but thousands suffer greatly from it. while most get help when returning from war, thousands still are not being helped with it.!!!
FACT: our goverment, just sweeps it under the carpet when our soldiers return as if it isnt anything to worry about as they have done their job. but the hard cold reality of it is, when these men and women return from war, the war isnt over for them, its far from the end and they live with the nightmares everyday.
it is about time, that our goverment sits up and takes notice that many of our soldiers just cant handle coming home, getting back into ‘normal’ routine and end up being violent, aggresstive, abusive and in many cases committ suicide because they havent received the help they need to help deal with the trauma they have seen and been put through!! This isn’t just a job to our soldiers, its their lives and they need as much help and backing, so they can carry on! POLITICS!!! thats all it is at the end of the day to our UK goverment… but these soldiers are people too and having there troubles swept under the carpet for doing their ‘job’ is not right or acceptable!

Post-Traumatic Stress and Fire-Fighters

Posted on Oct 22, 2008 under Post Traumatic Stress Disorder | No Comment

Emergency service personnel, such as fire fighters, police officers and paramedics often face stressful situations, and as a result of their work they are at increased risk of developing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In an attempt to protect them against PTSD, many personnel are required to attend group debriefing sessions following exposure to traumatic events. However, there is evidence that these group debriefing sessions may actually increase the risk of PTSD and also permanently distort the participants memories for the events they witnessed.

Over the next three years, a team of leading researchers from the University of New South Wales will work with NSW Fire Brigades to:

1) Develop an effective PTSD intervention for emergency service personnel.

2) Ensure that the new intervention also preserves the integrity of the participants memories for critical events.

This slideshow will be used at the 2008 ARC Expo.

What is the treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that is a 4 letter acronym starting with E?

Posted on Oct 20, 2008 under Post Traumatic Stress Disorder | 1 Comment

It’s something like ELPD or EPDL or… do you know?

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a form of psychotherapy that was developed to resolve symptoms resulting from disturbing and unresolved life experiences. It uses a structured approach to address past, present, and future aspects of disturbing memories. The approach was developed by Francine Shapiro to resolve the development of trauma-related disorders as resulting from exposure to a traumatic or distressing event, such as rape. Clinical trials have demonstrated EMDR’s efficacy in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).[citation needed] In some studies it has been shown to be equivalent to cognitive behavioral and exposure therapies, and more effective than some alternative treatments (see effectiveness sections below). However, the effectiveness of the mechanisms behind EMDR have been questioned, with most leading researchers concluding that cognitive restructuring (which is common in most therapies for PTSD), rather than the eye movements, are responsible for change. Although some clinicians may use EMDR for various problems, its research support is primarily for disorders stemming from distressing life experiences.
