What medication is best for anxiety/panic attacks?

Posted on Oct 10, 2008 under anxiety panic attacks | 10 Comments

I am already on citralopram

Xanax (also known as alprazolam) but be warned, it could destroy your life. It almost did to me. It worked but they are extremely addictive and it can be a slippery slope once you get started on them. If you get them, stick with a low dose and don't be tempted to take more..that's where the problems start. You need to get a REPUTABLE doctor to oversee your usage. I had a quack who gave me 160 of them at a time!! I overdosed and almost died on them.

Who takes fish oil for anxiety and panic attacks?

Posted on Oct 09, 2008 under anxiety panic attacks | 8 Comments

my doctor called me today and told me to take fish oil one caspsal a day. because i been having anxiety and panic attacks and what is this going to do for me? anybody take this for there anxiety? and what does it do?

Negative emotions (like sadness, stress, anger, etc.) causes your Serotonin production to be low; when your Serotonin level is low, you are more prone to getting Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, etc.

Medication like Antidepressants (SSRI - Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) helps to boost Serotonin level.
But there are natural ways to do it without medication. There’s this strange herb called “St John’s Wort” - it is said to be more effective than Prozac. No, it is not for mild depression only and ignore those sayings. In fact, it does help anxiety and panic-attacks as St John’s Wort works like prozac. Other natural ways will be exercise, diet, more exposure to light, etc.

The problem is that, even if your Serotonin is balanced… you have that “learned behavior” in your mind. You need to break that initial cycle to destroy that learned behavior - Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) does this. A technique that you can use without CBT will be Distraction… There are several other techniques to help cope them!
Ok, to use Distraction: Firstly, try to….

Where does social anxiety and panic attacks come from?
Why did I started having them about 3 years ago? What are some
things that can cause them? I think first I had social anxiety, than after a while I started having panic attacks. And after unable to socialize with people normally and started having agorophobia which lead to depression. But where did social anxiety came from what caused it? What could be the factors?

Fear.
Real and unreal. Rational and unrational. See you doctor…he can prescribe something for that. There is no need to feel that way anymore so go and see him. Your life will change dramatically. It is a very common thing you have.

Can switching from zoloft to the generic brand cause panic attacks and anxiety?

Posted on Oct 07, 2008 under anxiety panic attacks | 6 Comments

I have been taking zoloft for about 1 year for panic attacks and depression. I had been feeling great again. About 2 weeks after i switched from the name brand zoloft to the generic brand I started feeling anxious and nervous again and had 2 panic attacks for no apparant reason. I was becoming more tired and irritable, more than usual. They only thing I could think of was the switch in medications. I thought those days of anxiety and panic were over. Please help.

It shouldn't matter. Sertraline, the generic of Zoloft must be AB equivalent to brand name Zoloft in the "orange book" in order for it to be therapeutically equivalent. Usually the change is psychological because the FDA requires the generic to be exactly the same as the brand name. if it makes you feel better, go back to brand name. but, it will be more expensive.

What’s the best way to deal with anxiety & panic attacks?

Posted on Oct 06, 2008 under anxiety panic attacks | 5 Comments

How do you deal with your anxieties?
The best way to deal with it?
How do you mentally control your emotions?
Do you try to get busy?
Tips?
Sorry too many questions :s

Could be a date, going up on stage to get that award, visiting in-laws(for the first time), first day at work etc..
I hate when my anxiety kicks in & it can really drive me mad..

There are physical ways to control it-like deep breathing and visualization. But the cognitive exercise that helps me most is making a divided list about the situation or fear I have - one column is “things I cannot control”, the other column is “things I can control”. When you let go of the things you have no control over, a lot of your anxiety is diffused. Also, when you write down the positive action you can take, you regain control over your anxiety and it feels more manageable. It may seem difficult to do this at first, but after awhile you won’t even need to write it down-you will be able to use this coping skill out of habit.I learned this from a great therapist.

Does anxiety/panic attacks/depression that are triggered by recreational drug use go away?

Posted on Oct 05, 2008 under anxiety panic attacks | 12 Comments

If someone starts having panic attacks and depression after recreational drug use, will the problems go away eventually? Even if this person has stopped the drug use and the anxiety and panic and depression is still there 9 months later?

Maybe your anxiety and depression have absolutely nothing to do with the drug use. If it’s been 9 months since you’ve used, there might be a more severe underlying problem. That actually may be the reason you used in the first place. Many times, people that suffer from emotional problems use drugs to self medicate or escape their feelings. You should go see a psychiatrist, therapist, or counselor to discuss these issues to get to the root of your anxiety and depression.
Best of luck :)

Can an acupunturist or narturopathic doctor helps me with anxiety, panic attacks, phobias and depression?

Posted on Oct 04, 2008 under anxiety panic attacks | 7 Comments

I have tried CBT and it has changed my thoughts and how I think about things, but since it runs in my family i don't really have a source or a cause.

You’ll do better with some cognitive and physical techniques rather than herbs and such.

Meditation and yoga have been used for centuries to reduce stress and anxiety.

Exercise is mandatory not only for mental health but to maintain optimum physical health. You are body/mind, the mind works best when the body is maintained in good condition.

Do you know the source of your depression? Have you sought counseling for it?

Are there any over the counter medicines for anxiety/panic attacks?

Posted on Oct 03, 2008 under anxiety panic attacks | 3 Comments

I don’t want anything I’d need a prescription for, just something to stop a panic attack when it happens.
Okay, what I really want is someone's experience. I looked online, too. Statistics and dosage are nice, but I'd rather someone tell me they used something and it worked.

I haven’t heard of anything. If you find out let me know because I am suffering from them right now.

Panic/Anxiety attacks brought on by alcohol?

Posted on Sep 28, 2008 under anxiety panic attacks | 3 Comments

I have had panic attacks and GAD for the last two years and have recently noticed that if I have some cocktails in the evening the next day is like a rollercoaster of panic attacks. Feeling like my throat is closing and I am losing control of my body. Is there a direct link between alcohol consumption and panic and anxiety disorders? I should mention that on days I do not consume alcohol I am 80-90% okay. Has anyone out there found this to be the case?

I definitely had this experience–there was a direct linkage between alcohol consumption and panic attacks. I quit drinking completely several years ago and since then I've had very few problems with panic.

Why would my doctor put me on Zoloft if it is "precribed for depression" and I went for anxiety/panic attacks?

Posted on Sep 26, 2008 under anxiety panic attacks | 5 Comments

Ive been taking the Zoloft two months now. My anxiety and panic attacks are the same if not worse. I dont understand why I would be put on this and not given something like I have been told about Xanax? How do I talk to my doctor about getting on something for my panic attacks?

~Zoloft works for Depression, Anxiety and Panic Attacks. Obviously it's not helping you, so you should talk to your doctor about trying something different. Just tell him you would like to try Xanax, you heard good things about it, make sure he knows how hard it is for you to deal with panic attacks.
Xanax is only temporary. Your body builds up a tolerance to it really quick. Usually it's prescribed until the drug you're taking starts working.
If you can't talk to your doctor about your feelings, take someone with you, who can speak for you.
I'm sorry about the panic attacks, I have them too. I have a link below for you on Xanax. Good luck to you.~
