For those with anxiety disorders: Do you find relationships more difficult?

Posted on Nov 25, 2008 under anxiety disorders | 1 Comment

I have been diagnosed with GDA for several years now and am in the process of switching medications. Do you find relationships are difficult on you like worrying too much and being anxious about a lot of little things? If so, how do you cope with it?

In general it makes life harder but I cope by trying to treat the anxiety. Also you have to make sure your partner understands what you’re dealing with, if they don’t it can create a lot of problems. Also I try to just take my mind off things, space out, relax, be productive, it’s up to you.

Are schools allowed to give kids with anxiety disorders or learning differences modified homework assignments?

Posted on Nov 09, 2008 under anxiety disorders | 1 Comment

At a public high school could i kid in regular classes with an anxiety disorder or learning difference get modified homework assignments as part of an IEP? Like if the kid has 4 or five hours of homework a night and they try to get it done but it stresses them out to much? Or would that be considered cheating.

Thanks

If a student has been identified as a special needs student then his IEP should reflect the modifications to programming, instruction, and grading and be directly related to the student’s disability. If he is receiving 4-5 hours of homework it doesn’t sound like an IEP has been assigned. A 504 plan is used for those students not eligible for Special Education but in need of a modified education plan. It is usually drafted by the school counselor and should make allowances such as extra time for testing, help with note taking, sitting closer to the teacher, etc. The transcript may reflect the modified coursework and indicate that a lower standard of coursework was provided. A doctor’s diagnosis may be required to start the process. That’s about all I know, hope its right and hope it helps.

How much of depression and anxiety disorders can be attributed to heredity?

Posted on Nov 05, 2008 under anxiety disorders | 4 Comments

Quite a bit, depending on what kind of anxiety and depression the individual is experiencing.

Often times anxiety and depression is due to drug and/or alcohol use and/or abuse. It may or may not be familiar or hereditary, but until the individual is detoxed and treated for their addiction there is no way to know if a clinical and underlying, DNA related depression exists.

One of the biggest problems for persons with depression is that they blame themselves for being depressed. Anything that's not going right in their lives they see as a reason to hate themselves, the reason for their depression and then they begin to self medicate. They drink alcohol, go to their doctor for anti-anxiety and anti-depressant drugs, often times abuse them, and or abuse street drugs. Not all depressed persons do, but a lot of them do. Especially those with little education about depression and especially those with no health insurance.

But I've moved off the original subject. Yes, depression, and even depression with substance abuse does run in families. It's still not able to be tracked by DNA, but is familial (the diseases do run in the family).

Companion K9 for ppl with anxiety disorders?

I have been trying to find information about this but all I can ever find is K9’s for the blind. Does anyone have a suggestion as to where I can look for this information?

If your mental health issue qualifies as a disability, there is such a thing as a service dog for that issue. There are dogs trained to help an owner in case of panic attack, and even help distract during OCD rituals.

Try searching for “psychiatric service dog.” You will be hard pressed to find organizations for it because it is relatively new to my knowledge, and you may have trouble with places where dogs are not normally allowed because most store owners, etc haven’t heard of it. So if this is something you’re looking for, be prepared to fight for it.

Can a dopamine imbalance be a cause of anxiety disorders?

Posted on Oct 31, 2008 under anxiety disorders | 4 Comments

When someone has a shortage of dopamine, can this be a cause of an anxiety disorder such as Social Anxiety?

If so, what treatments are available when someone has these two psychiatric issues combined?

Negative emotions (like sadness, stress, anger, etc.) causes your Serotonin production to be low; when your Serotonin level is low, you are more prone to

getting Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, etc.

Medication like Antidepressants (SSRI - Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) helps to boost Serotonin level.
But there are natural ways to do it without medication. There’s this strange herb called “St John’s Wort” - it is said to be more effective than Prozac. No, it

is not for mild depression only and ignore those sayings. In fact, it does help anxiety and panic-attacks as St John’s Wort works like prozac. Other natural

ways will be exercise, diet, more exposure to light, etc.

The problem is that, even if your Serotonin is balanced… you have that “learned behavior” in your mind. You need to break that initial cycle to destroy that

learned behavior - Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) does this. A technique that you can use without CBT will be Distraction… There are several other

techniques to help cope them!
Ok, to use Distraction: Firstly, try to….

What role does a lack of safety signals play in the development & maintenance of generalized anxiety disorders?

Are all anxiety disorders treated with the same treatment?

Posted on Oct 25, 2008 under anxiety disorders | 5 Comments

I’m doing a research paper on the five main types of anxiety disorders, Obsessive-Compulsive, Post-Traumatic Stress, Panic, Social Anxiety, and Generalized Anxiety. Are all of these disorders treated with cognitive-behavioral therapy and SSRI’s? I was wanting to be able to sum up the treatment in one paragraph at the end rather than dedicating a paragraph about treatment to each disorder. Thanks in advance. [:

Not all, because different people may react differently to medication. Doctors are trying to find the minimum effective dose, with the medication with the least side effects. If SSRI does not help they have to switch to a more serious medication, with perhaps more severe side effects.
Many medications originally approved for the treatment of depression have been found to relieve symptoms of anxiety. These include certain SSRIs, tricyclic antidepressants, MAOIs, and the newer atypical antidepressants.

Antidepressants are often preferred over the traditional anti-anxiety drugs because the risk for dependency and abuse is smaller. However, antidepressants take up to 4 to 6 weeks to begin relieving anxiety symptoms, so they can’t be taken “as needed.” For example, antidepressants wouldn’t help at all if you waited until you were having a panic attack to take them. Their use is limited to chronic anxiety problems that require ongoing treatment.

The antidepressants most widely prescribed for anxiety are the SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors).

At what age can you start getting panic/anxiety disorders?

Posted on Oct 24, 2008 under anxiety disorders | 6 Comments

Are they born with it? If not, when does it usually develop?
Can you be 16 and get a panic attack and all of sudden suffer from panic/anxiety disorder? is it possible?

thanks for answers

It’s possible. Your brain chemistry changes a lot, putting it mildly. If your attacks came on suddenly, there is a possibility that they will leave when you are out of adolescence. Usually though, there has been underlying stress and other factors for years. Sixteen is the age I began to have regular panic attacks, but when I thought back I could remember it happening twice before. There’s no minimum age or maximum age to panic attacks and mental disorders.

6. How does culture play a role in anxiety disorders? Provide at least two examples of disorders?
