Can a dopamine imbalance be a cause of anxiety disorders?
Posted on Oct 31, 2008 under anxiety disorders |When someone has a shortage of dopamine, can this be a cause of an anxiety disorder such as Social Anxiety?
If so, what treatments are available when someone has these two psychiatric issues combined?
Negative emotions (like sadness, stress, anger, etc.) causes your Serotonin production to be low; when your Serotonin level is low, you are more prone to
getting Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, etc.
Medication like Antidepressants (SSRI - Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) helps to boost Serotonin level.
But there are natural ways to do it without medication. There’s this strange herb called “St John’s Wort” - it is said to be more effective than Prozac. No, it
is not for mild depression only and ignore those sayings. In fact, it does help anxiety and panic-attacks as St John’s Wort works like prozac. Other natural
ways will be exercise, diet, more exposure to light, etc.
The problem is that, even if your Serotonin is balanced… you have that “learned behavior” in your mind. You need to break that initial cycle to destroy that
learned behavior - Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) does this. A technique that you can use without CBT will be Distraction… There are several other
techniques to help cope them!
Ok, to use Distraction: Firstly, try to….

I don’t know 100% percent of if it can be the root cause but it definitely can amplify the symptoms in a negative way. I know that does not help but it gives you a little insight. Also be very careful because my older sister had anxiety problems and now cannot go 5 minutes without medicine. I started suffering from panic attacks and the best fight for me was to fight the fear as best as I could. Do not suppress it. Face it. I know it can be terrible I have had panic attacks where I thought I was dying and I wanted to cry because they were so bad. You can face them you have to train your body to stay relaxed and feel like you don’t have to be in control to be safe. You can relax nothing will happen.

Your question involved dopamine and anxiety in relationship to one another. Dopamine is a naturally occurring element in the body that works with epinephrine to regulate many physiological reactions. Dopamine is the drug of choice for those who suffer from Parkinson’s Disease which, as I’m sure you know, causes muscle spasm and dysphagia. Epinephrine is a hormone-like substance produced from the adrenal cortex. I’m sure that you know what adrenal gland imbalance can produce. The answer to your question is, yes. A shortage of dopamine is not a psychiatric disorder, as you have alluded to; it is merely an imbalance that can be rectified with drug therapy. Social Anxiety could, very well indeed, be related to a physiological imbalance instead of a psychiatric disorder. Of further note, if the patient does suffer from Panic or Anxiety attributed to only Social circumstances, then there are some common sense things to do about it. Understand the basic cause of Panic Disorder: It is from over-breathing into the diaphragm. The patient may be unaware that they are doing it. Over-breathing causes a change in the oxygen blood ratios, leading to light-headiness and panic. A simple remedy, during attacks, is to simply slowing read the sentences in a book, breathing only at the end of the sentence or humming a simple tune taking a breath only at the end of phrases. Holding the breath for 10 seconds can also help to balance the blood ratios again. If the patient understands that Panic Disorder is physically controllable, it may serve as a remedy. Feel free to expand on your explanation of why you think these two symptoms are psychiatric in origin.
