What Are Anxiety Disorders? Do You Have One?

« How long will I continue to have panic attacks? / is there a natural way to cure obsessive compulsive disorder? »

At what age can you start getting panic/anxiety disorders?

Posted on Oct 24, 2008 under anxiety disorders |

Are they born with it? If not, when does it usually develop?
Can you be 16 and get a panic attack and all of sudden suffer from panic/anxiety disorder? is it possible?

thanks for answers

It’s possible. Your brain chemistry changes a lot, putting it mildly. If your attacks came on suddenly, there is a possibility that they will leave when you are out of adolescence. Usually though, there has been underlying stress and other factors for years. Sixteen is the age I began to have regular panic attacks, but when I thought back I could remember it happening twice before. There’s no minimum age or maximum age to panic attacks and mental disorders.

You canbe 16 and start feeling panicky and anxious. Panic attacks can happen at that age out of the blue. It is usually associated with hormonal changes. stressors of adolescence, and immature coping mechanisms. For more details go to psychcentral.com or webmd.com

i did a report on phobias which is a panic/anxiety disorder. it is possible to get a phobia at any age. i don’t think a single panic attack will cause a panic/anxiety disorder. i think it is possible but highly unlikely.

just to let you know you don’t have a phobia because if you did you wouldn’t be on the computer.

You can be any age and have a panic attack. You aren’t born with it. I had my first panic attack when I was 9. I don’t have many, though. If you’re 16 and you’re having a panic attack, it’s completely normal!

I had my first full blown panic attack at age nine, my niece has had anxiety since she was six Panic and anxiety disorders are seemingly sudden, but as you work on overcoming these issues (through counseling, and sometimes medication), You discover that the causes actually have always been there, or have been building up.

Negative emotions (like sadness, stress, anger, etc.) causes your Serotonin production to be low; when your Serotonin level is low, you are more prone to getting Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, etc.

Medication like Antidepressants (SSRI - Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) helps to boost Serotonin level.

But there are natural ways to do it without medication. There’s this strange herb called “St John’s Wort” - it is said to be more effective than Prozac. No, it is not for mild depression only and ignore those sayings. In fact, it does help anxiety and panic-attacks as St John’s Wort works like prozac. Other natural ways will be exercise, diet, more exposure to light, etc.
The problem is that, even if your Serotonin is balanced… you have that “learned behavior” in your mind. You need to break that initial cycle to destroy that learned behavior - Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) does this. A technique that you can use without CBT will be Distraction… There are several other techniques to help cope them!
Ok, to use Distraction: Firstly, try to….
