Anxiety attack/panic attack! Help!?

Posted on Sep 28, 2008 under anxiety attack symptoms | 4 Comments

Anxiety attack hit me twice this week. The first time it struck me, I was sent to ER and CT scan, EKG, blood tests were all normal. However, after that attack, I felt my left foot swollen (although not obvious from its appearance). Also I noticed that I got eye floaters sometimes. When anxiety attacked me the second time, my left foot felt heavy and pretty swollen (but again not very obvious from appearance). I was wondering if swollen foot and eye floaters were all the symptoms of anxiety/panic attack? Or I have something else to worry about (like heart disease, diabetes….)? Thanks very much for the help in advance!
Yes, I did feel my left foot swollen big. It's like my left shoe suddenly becomes tighter. However I don't have this kind feeling on right foot or both hands. Also the swollen feeling lasted for several hours. How did you make anxiety attack go away forever? Thanks very much for your help!
I was hit by anxiety attack the first time while in office. Second time I was hit while I was working out (suddenly my left foot felt pretty heavy and swollen, then tingling on both side, nauseous….). Doctor did prescribe ATIVAN for me. However, is it safe to take it everyday for a couple of months? Thanks!

You may want to look into an allergic reaction as well. Next time the panic hits, try taking some benadryl and see if that helps any.

The swollen foot sounds like it might be caused by allergic reaction. Bodies are weird and not everyone has the classic allergic reaction symptoms, and sometimes an allergic reaction can mimic a panic attack type feeling, so it might be worth checking out just to make sure.

But I am concerned that the food swells, as thats not normal and makes me worry that you do have something physically wrong with you causing the problem.

Can you have panic attacks while you are sleeping?

I woke up the other night sitting up in bed crying and breathing heavily. Was this a panic/anxiety attack of some kind. I have had attacks during the day recently and am on meds. Could it be the meds?

Answer:
About 50% of all patients with panic disorder have nocturnal panic attacks, but most of the events will be happening during daytime activities. Research shows that only 10.2% of all panic attacks happen at night, but patients might be more severely concerned about these events.
A significant number of patients are afraid of the nighttime and do expect a loss of control or severe somatic consequences like a heart attack, stroke or other irrational cause of death. Of course this is most unlikely!

We know that most panic attacks are NOT caused by dreams. Records of sleep polysomnographia show a maximum of panic attacks during early sleep phase (phase II), not during the REM-phases associated with dreams. This is a major difference to nightmares! Nightmares happen during the second half of the night, so we are often able to remember the content of these dreams.

Pavor nocturnus is a very specific type of sleeping disorder, more common among children. It is defined by a sudden avakening with crying, strong anxiety symptoms and vegetative symptoms like heart palpitations, short breathening and sweating. This type of sleeping problems occur during deep phases of sleep (phase IV).

Arousals caused by sleep apnea syndromes are usually not characterized by extreme anxiety symptoms. But this sleep disorder might have an effect on the origin of panic attacks, because sleep apnea has an impact on heart frequency and blood pressure. Chronic arousal of anxiety during night could be a kind of dysfunctional protection against apnea during night.

The exact causes for panic attacks at night are not known. Other possible causes include an increase of CO2-concentration (False Suffocation alarm hypothesis) or changes of the parasympathotonic system due to autonomic dysfunction.

So panic attacks at night will be mainly influenced by the events of the last day, consumption of alcohol or drugs and a general higher arousal due to the anxiety disorder of the client.

How do I stop anxiety attacks?

I am 12 years old, and I have been having anxiety attacks since I was 7 or 8. I go to a psychiatrist every couple of months, and sometimes a few times a month, but sometimes that doesn’t help. Do you have any way that I could take my mind off of what’s causing the anxiety, or just relax? Thanks for your help!

I know this sounds like a hard thing to do. But if you will focus on the things you can change and do not worry about what you cannot change your attacks will become less and less. Take baby steps doing this. It will help. Been there done that.

LVH / Heart murmer / panic attack?

Posted on Sep 28, 2008 under panic attack symptoms | 6 Comments

I'm 42 & previously very healthy.
Went to ER with sudden h/attack symptoms - they said panic attack & high bp,
went to GP she said stress & high b/p - also a heart murmur.
Went to Cardiologist - diagnoised LVH.
a) Is there a connection between Panic / LVH / Heart murmur?
b) Do you think it was really a panic attack - never had one before?
c)Cardio did not mention h/murmur no one has before - do they come and go?
d) Been on Cardizem for a month and still have high b/p and chest pains - Cardio just increased it from 180mg to 300mg - is it normal to still have chest pains?

Thanks I am new to this medical world!

a) No, Left ventricular hypertension is caused by chronic hypertension.

b) Its possible I would need to know more of the symptoms

c) NO it is still there, whether it be mitral, aortic, or Tricuspid. You would need an Echo-cardiogram to confirm.

d) That depends on its cause- My opinion is NO, lowering your blood pressure will not alieve the underlying cause- you need a stress test and an Echo-cardiogram. We usually give Cardizem to lower heartrates. I would suggest a Beta Blocker such as Toprol.

Panic/Anxiety attacks brought on by alcohol?

Posted on Sep 28, 2008 under anxiety panic attacks | 3 Comments

I have had panic attacks and GAD for the last two years and have recently noticed that if I have some cocktails in the evening the next day is like a rollercoaster of panic attacks. Feeling like my throat is closing and I am losing control of my body. Is there a direct link between alcohol consumption and panic and anxiety disorders? I should mention that on days I do not consume alcohol I am 80-90% okay. Has anyone out there found this to be the case?

I definitely had this experience–there was a direct linkage between alcohol consumption and panic attacks. I quit drinking completely several years ago and since then I've had very few problems with panic.

How do I get rid of anxiety towards a certain person?

We met online, we met in person, something happened and now I have anxiety. How do I get rid of the anxiety? I still want to get back with my family.

Negative emotions (like sadness, stress, anger, etc.) causes your Serotonin production to be low; when your Serotonin level is low, you are more prone to getting Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, etc.
Medication like Antidepressants (SSRI - Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) helps to boost Serotonin level.
But there are natural ways to do it without medication. There’s this strange herb called “St John’s Wort” - it is said to be more effective than Prozac. No, it is not for mild depression only and ignore those sayings. In fact, it does help anxiety and panic-attacks as St John’s Wort works like prozac. Other natural ways will be exercise, diet, more exposure to light, etc.
The problem is that, even if your Serotonin is balanced… you have that “learned behavior” in your mind. You need to break that initial cycle to destroy that learned behavior - Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) does this. A technique that you can use without CBT will be Distraction… There are several other techniques to help cope them!
Ok, to use Distraction: Firstly, try to….

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder ~ 4 ~ Triggers

Posted on Sep 27, 2008 under Post Traumatic Stress Disorder | 2 Comments

A trigger is a series of events that stirs up the difficult and unpleasant memories of the past and often awakens our flight or fight mechanisms. Images, words, music, activity or any combination thereof can result in an episode of extreme emotion such as anger, grief, and sometimes even deep sorrow. The sufferer of PTSD is sensitized to an unusual degree by a nervous system that is overloaded and can often present in ways that are unusual. Recognizing and being able to judge what is a reasonable emotional response to a given situation may be a skill that the sufferer of PTSD must re-learn.
