My Social Anxiety (part 6)

Posted on Sep 28, 2008 under what is anxiety | 12 Comments

I was born into a Catholic family. I am more agnostic right now. I believe that everything happens for a reason. In other words, I have social anxiety for a reason. It makes me a stronger person…or maybe it prevented me from being a bad person. Either way, I intend on using what I’ve learned to make a difference in this world. We social phobics tend to think similarly. And what’s interesting is that our style of thinking is quite different than the way other people think. The first thing that amazed me when I watched other phobics talk on youtube was how alike we are. I thought I was the only person in the world like me. Do you think that our style of thinking is good or bad? (If you say both, is it more good than bad or vice versa?)

How do you know if you have a obsessive compulsive disorder?

Posted on Sep 28, 2008 under obsessive compulsive disorder | 1 Comment

im just curious…cuz if i get hit with somthin new i freak out and try to make it my life!! like naruto for example…do i have OCD? or am i just weird?

I think you're in the wrong section..this is the "pets" section. I don't understand what you were trying to describe. . You need to google OCD…or watch "Monk" on tv..he has it. Do you mean you get "consumed" with "the thing that hit"you? I think that would be called something else… Anyway…why does it matter? OCD is just a name somebody made of for a certain way of acting. If it bothers you that you do this…then try to overcome it with self control (not drugs). You have more power over yourself than you know. If you can't stop playing the games..there is a place online that gives you tips on controlling urges.. I had to go to one of those sites for email. I couldn't stop checking my email. It helped. Good Luck.

Should I tell my job about my ADHD and GAD?

Posted on Sep 28, 2008 under GAD | 2 Comments

Because the last job that I had, my employees were asking too much from me. They were being very demanding and they wanted me to do 10 million things in one hour. I kept on getting yelled at (they didn't know about my psychiatric disorders and it was at Taco Bell). Unfortunately, I went through a complete meltdown. I mean, full on GAD meltdown. I FLEE away from my job on my shift. I practically ran out of the work place and I was missing for an hour before I could collect myself. I've had panic attacks before, but I never actually ran away from the scene of the crime.

Customers do not stress me out, EVER; it's just co-workers/supervisors/shift managers that stress me out.

I'm just worried that it'll happen again. I hope that it doesn't. I'm trying to go on medication because I'm starting to have mild attacks (chest pains, rapid heard beat), again.

My general rule is to go through the initial 90 trial period at a job and then disclose my mental illness to human resources and to my immediate supervisor if they are trustworthy.

You are protected under the American's with Disabilities Act only if you disclose your illness. This means your employer must be flexible with you and make certain accomodations.

I wait for my 90 days to be up, because I have been turned down for jobs in the past because i KNOW it was from being upfront about my condition.

One thing I had to do, and that you might consider, is finding a lower stress type job, like data entry, or light office work. Fast food and dealing with the public can be very triggering for our respective illnesses.

What are the odds of getting post traumatic stress disorder, outside of the army? Personal experiences please?

Posted on Sep 28, 2008 under Post Traumatic Stress Disorder | 5 Comments

I’m entering the army soon and have seen exclusives on army and military PTSD and i was just wondering what are the risks of me getting that my self. If you could include personal references whether its yourself or a friend I would appreciate that. Also if I could get some opinions from physcological professionals. Thank you!

I am not a psychological professional. I am a State Chaplain of the Vietnam Veterans of America. From your question if I take it at face value you are weighing your odds which is a very logical thing to do before any major action.

So lets use logic to answer your question. PTSD is a normal human reaction to an abnormal life event. It is caused by an event or series of events which traumatize the person.

Certainly the odds of experiencing a traumatic event are influenced by the profession we choose. If you become a combat military man then your odds of experiencing trauma are higher than someone who is perhaps a Children's Librarian. However the librarian is not immune from trauma. Perhaps the library is engulfed in flames and one of the children is burned alive before your eyes. The librarian could be in an automobile accident, raped, assaulted, or any number of possibilities.

Also know that everyone who experiences a traumatic event does not develop PTSD. Two people could experience the same thing and one would recover in a short time while the other could be effected for the rest of their lives.

To reduce your over all risk of PTSD it is helpful to maintain a good support system of family and friends because you may need them in a time of need. Further you will be needed by some of them in their times of need. Also be careful of alcohol and drug use. If something happens do not be afraid to seek help. You will not be the first to have the problem or the last.

How effective is Kava Kava in treating anxiety and depression?

Posted on Sep 28, 2008 under treating anxiety | 2 Comments

I was reading the information below that I found on the following website: http://www.gslsupplements.com And I was wondering how effective can this herb be in treating anxiety as well as depression. I thought that Kava Kava was only given for anxiety. I didn't know people also take it for depression. Anyways, I just would like to know how well it works.
Thanks!

"Premium GSL ® Kava Kava is made from whole kava roots to produce the highest quality product. Kava is an all-natural, mild sedative that relaxes the body without harmful side effects. The active compound “kavalactones” acts as a muscle relaxant and sleep aid. It also helps to reduce anxiety, restlessness, and stress. It has become a popular botanical because it also works on the central nervous system and promotes relaxation to those suffering from anxiety or depression."

What symptoms do you get or stress about when you have anxiety? Please answer!?

Posted on Sep 28, 2008 under anxiety symptoms | 6 Comments

I’m just curious as to what symptoms everyone and anyone with an anxiety disorder gets when they have anxiety. Not just attacks, but just plain anxiety.. Mine include weird feeling in head, my entire body tenses up, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, crying, vision problems, tension headaches, empty feeling in my head.. etc. The list goes on (this is why my anxiety is so hard to get rid off.)

I freak out any time I throw up a lot. I feel like I can’t breath and I start to cry and hyperventilate. Another thing I can’t handle for some reason is coming out of anesthesia. I start to freak out sobbing uncontrollably and can’t breathe. I think anytime I feel out of control with my body I freak out. I’m way scared about going into labor and being alone.

I have just moved to Tucson recently and need to find a therapist for depression/anxiety, any ideas?

Posted on Sep 28, 2008 under anxiety depression | 2 Comments

My family doctor has diagnosed me with depression and generalized anxiety disorder. I am taking Lexapro, and would like someone who understands my religious faith as well.
I live in Tucson, AZ and have not found a good therapist yet. It is very difficult to keep looking without being discouraged.

Hi there….I would try the following therapists, who I think would be sensitive to your spiritual needs as well…. Good luck!

Noreen B. Conroy, MA, CRC, LPC, LISAC

Philosophy: Everyone is capable of change. My work is three-fold. First, I work with Choice Theory. What choices are you making? Are those choices working for you? What do you want? What choices might better serve you? Second, we look at what emotional, physical, intellectual, or spiritual blocks are getting in the way of taking action. Third, I educate on the brain and how our choices may effect its chemistry and reactions.

Susie J. Hallowell, MA,CPC

Philosophy: I believe that in the context of a safe, supportive therapeutic relationship, in which one's feelings are honored, strengths are validated and defenses are lovingly challenged, people access their innate wisdom and are empowered to heal, grow and move from surviving to thriving.
